Customer Support Scam ALERT!
During a recent phone call from a frantic QuickBooks Desktop user, the problem was a pop-up message that advised her that there was an unexpected error when trying to access the company file. The message included a handy notice to call Intuit Support. Instead of reaching QuickBooks, you actually get to speak with a scammer that will “unlock” your computer. This is nothing but a scammer at work – a mere thief – that hopes you will call and surrender your (or your company’s) money. In other words, a modern day pick-pocket.
Although I know longer work with QuickBooks Desktop, this is a regular, often used scheme to get money from anyone that can be fooled. This is a common customer support scam – and it has been going on for sometime. They work by convincing you in some form and telling you there’s a problem with your computer. Of course, they offer to fix it.
Intuit or QuickBooks does reach out to you to fix a problem with your computer.
